MUDGEE DISTRICT SEED SAVERS

An offshoot of the Mudgee District Environment Group which meets at 6pm every third Thursday of the month.

History: We started in May 2000 with a flyer to attract other people.

Activities:

We celebrated Biodiversity Month in September at the markets here in Lawson Park ( which is mainly a morning event 8am to 1pm ) and I was wondering if there is anything you have to add to our public presentation. Like a glut of heirloom seeds from this area we can give away to interested people.

We are trying to make seeds and plants from our local seed network more accessible to our community by starting a stall at our local monthly market in Lawson Park here in Mudgee.

Hopefully this will become a venue for swapping seeds, plants and information,as well as being a fund raiser for our environment group.

Being part of the markets may provide more exposure and exchange for us than meetings in private homes, so we're going to give that a go.

Has anyone else tried this?

Lat we organised to have Bob Phelps of the Genethics Network from Melbourne here for a public forum along with a representative from Monsanto which we co-hosted with the local council GMO. Bob spoke very well and made the Monsanto rep look slightly inadequate.

Meetings: Quarterly at our house.

Mission Statement:

To collect and caretake the rich heritage of the traditional garden and farm crop varieties. Many of these precious plants are being lost for a host of reasons mainly involving the marketing strategies of big business.

To conserve genetic diversity and establish crop networks of non-hybrid edible and medicinal plants.

To regenerate what already exist in this area as well as building up locally adapted varieties through the network.

To draw together people who collect seeds and may have for generations, as well as beginner growers wanting to join our enthusiasm to eventually put delicious food from our own source on the table.

To share the growing experience, exchange knowledge and join in with the existing Seed Savers and other networks actively involved in safekeeping plant varieties for our future.

March 2002: Hope the Calabrese Broccoli is thriving for everyone - we were very pleased with the quantity that came off five plants
