CANBERRA ORGANIC GROWERS SEED SAVERS

People bring seeds to our meetings for swapping that takes place on the seed table - increasingly we have more of our local seeds and less and less of commercial packets.

Meetings: Fourth Tuesday of the month at Griffin Centre in Bunda Street, Civic, 7.30pm Activities:

Rosemary Stevenson and Laurie Thomson look after our seed saving efforts although a lot of our other gardeners produce the seed.

We package up seed for sale at all our meetings and at the various events we participate in around the Canberra region. We mainly produce seed for our members but we sell any excess to the public. We also produce seedlings raised from seed in our seed bank to sell.

More community gardens are being established by COGGS and some do seed saving (we have ten gardens ranging from about 1500 sqm up to about a hectare plus a demonstration garden). Exclusion cages are seen in the gardens. Next season we hope to expand our seed saving efforts by setting aside a plot in each of our community gardens specifically for seed production.

There is still some debate about which seeds we should produce. I suspect it will probably be those which are suitable for a Canberra type climate but are not readily available elsewhere.

Members give talks to school children. These include seed saving and we take along the seed table.

The email address above for COGS is correct but a new one may appear in the future on our new web site. We are still negotiating with our new service provider and we will let you know if there are any changes. Our new web site is www.cogs.asn.au although the old one will still work for a few months yet.
